Pune DC - Denial of Service attack Resolved

Our Pune DC network suffered a Denial of Service attack today at 00:04 AM local time (GMT + 5:30). This resulted in brief periods of high packet loss and partial outages till 00:10 AM while our DDoS protection system analyzed and mitigated the attack. Another attack started against same client at 00:27 AM and was mitigated by 00:31 AM. We have disabled the client to prevent further attacks and outages.

One of our customers was the target of a large DDoS attack which caused a 5-8 minute period of extreme packet loss between 19:16 to 19:24 hours today ( 28th Jan 2015 )

We have disabled this customer and placed the network under ddos mitigation. Customers under the same network will notice higher latency for upto 24 hours while we make sure there are no further attacks.

This server had a couple of outages in past 2 days, and has now completely failed. We can see 2 drives in the raid array have failed and are preventing the server from coming back online.

Affected clients can request migration to another location , immediately.

US Asheville location Network Outage Resolved

As you may have noticed , our Asheville, NC, USA location is offline since 14:00 hours IST (GMT + 5:30) . The datacenter network engineers are checking the issue.
Currently we do not have an ETA. We will update this post with more information as soon as we have hear from them.

As of 15:40 hours IST (GMT + 5:30) the network is back online. We are waiting for RFO from the datacenter. We will post the same here once we receive it.

RFO from datacenter is as follows -

At approximately 4:00 AM EDT Immedion, LLC experienced a service impacting network event affecting the Immedion AS. The event was triggered by a sudden growth in the size of the Internet routing table. As a result of the sudden growth in routes, core routers within the Immedion, LLC network entered into a CEF Exception State causing packets to be processed by the router CPU. This method of forwarding packets caused the CPU to reach 100% causing significant packet loss for Internet and Transport customers.

At this time our Asheville, NC, Greenville, SC and Charleston, SC data centers are stable. The Immedion Columbia, SC data center is still experiencing an issue and engineers are engaged with the issue.

Spain Outage Resolved

As you may have noticed we are facing an outage in our Spain location. Earlier it was notified to us as a network outage by the datacenter. However, after checking they have confirmed that a PDU or Power distribution unit has failed causing the network switch as well as our servers to go down.

The PDU was replaced , however one of our nodes had a failed motherboard and raid. The datacenter is setting up a new node for us now.

Scheduled Maintenance Resolved

As per email sent to all customers, our datacenter operator will be performing maintenance on UPSes in the Pune IDC which will require 2 shutdowns and reboots of each server.

There might be some confusion on the time of the maintenance as well as the downtime required.

Maintenance will start on 8th March 2014 at 2000 hours IST and will end on 9th March 2014 at 0800 hours. Your websites will not go down throughout the maintenance period. There will be downtime only for 10-15 minutes each time the servers are shutdown and started again. The downtime will be lower for shared/reseller, hosted email and dedicated server clients as shutdown and start process is faster. Downtime for VPS clients will be a bit higher as the VPSes on each node will start one by one.

Pune IDC Network outage Resolved

Problem has been identified at TATA's end. We / they are being hit with a DDoS attack measuring 8 gbps. They are working on mitigating it and bringing it back online.

Following our earlier outage email, we would like to provide full RFO (reason for outage) and the resolution.

RFO -

On 7th Feb 2014 and 10th Feb 2014 , our network - specifically our shared / reseller platform was hit with large inbound DDoS attacks aimed at disrupting client service by flooding our network. The DDoS on 7th Feb was resolved within 30 minutes by blackholing the IP being attacked. However, on 10th Feb , the attack was distributed to different attack targets in our network and was large enough to disrupt TATA's own services. As you may know, TATA is currently our sole upstream provider at the TATA IDC. After many blackholed IPs and mitigation of DDoS service was restored to our Dedicated servers, VPS platforms and Email Hosting at 4:15 PM on 10th Feb. Shared / reseller was still being attacked and was brought back online by around 9 PM and sites were brought online one by one after that.

Resolution -

We discussed DDoS mitigation services with multiple providers , including TATA. The fastest one to implement protection was BlackLotus Communications and I am pleased to inform you that the protection has already been implemented. It will cover worldwide incoming traffic over the next 24 hours. All inbound traffic will be filtered by BlackLotus and only clean / non-attack traffic will be passed on to Leapswitch. We will not be disclosing the amount of protection for security reasons and we recommend that you do not resell our hosting as DDoS protected hosting. All outbound traffic will go through TATA and soon, from Airtel.

Service credits -

We sincerely apologize for the outage and as it has broken our SLA, we would like to offer service credits. Please open a ticket in our Billing department in the next 15 days requesting service credits for the outage and our billing team will process the same for you.

Power Outage at PA Resolved

I am sorry to inform you that-

There was a large explosion up the street from the Scranton PA data center.
Following that, there was issue with the Datacenter generator systems.
We are working on the issue and should be resolved as quickly as possible.
No ETA/details on explosion yet, but power is out in a multi-block radius.
I would expect us to be running on generator power most of the day during repair from the power company.

 

This affects most of SwitchSEO.com and some of the VPS service from LeapSwitch Networks.

UPS systems are being brought back online currently.
Service should be restored any time now.
We'll have to go thru and make sure all servers affected come back online, which will be a tedious process....most will reboot automatically but 10% typically need manual intervention.

Risk Classifications:

Risk classifications are based upon the probability of your experiencing a disruption in service.

(Low)  The probability of a disruption in service is minimal. The maintenance being performed involves basic infrastructure systems and should not affect normal operations. Although the risk of a service interruption is minimal, Netriplex requires this work be performed during the maintenance window as a matter of policy.

(Moderate) There is a possibility of a disruption in service. The maintenance being performed involves mission critical infrastructure systems. While redundant systems are the hallmark of our data center, we wanted to advise you in advance in the event the maintenance does not go as planned. We have taken all prudent precautions to eliminate the likelihood of a service interruption.

(High)  A service disruption should be anticipated.  The maintenance being performed affects mission critical infrastructure systems. Should a disruption in service occur, technicians will move rapidly to limit this interruption to the absolute minimum amount of time. This classification is required for maintenance where the risk of a service outage is anticipated at being greater than 80%.
