How to configure Email Routing In cPanel?

What Is Email Routing?

Email routing is a feature in cPanel that enables domain owners to determine how incoming email messages are processed by the email server. This can involve using your hosting provider’s local email server or the email server of an external provider, such as G Suite, Office365, or others.

How To Change Email Routing In CPanel

1. Login to your cPanel account.

2. Navigate to the “Email” section and click on “Email Routing”.

3. From the Domain section, choose the domain you wish to apply these settings for. If you only have one domain, it will be selected automatically.

4. From the Configure Email Routing section, you can see the four available options:

  • Automatically Detect Configuration: Unless you have a specific setup requiring explicit configurations, the recommended option is “Automatically Detect Configuration.”

  • Local Mail Exchanger: Handles all mail sent from the server to this domain locally, meaning it delivers the email to the mailbox on the server rather than to a remote mail service.

  • Backup Mail Exchanger: Functions as a remote mail exchanger unless the remote service is unreachable, in which case it acts as a local mail exchanger. For example, if Google is the mail service for the domain, emails are sent to Google's servers. If Google's servers are inaccessible, the mail is delivered locally.

  • Remote Mail Exchanger: Handles all mail sent to this domain remotely, delivering it to the mail service specified by the domain's MX record. For instance, if Google is set up as your mail service, emails are delivered to the mailboxes on Google's servers instead of your local mailbox.

It is essential to understand what each of these options does and choose the right one. Otherwise, you risk disrupting your domain’s Email communication.

5. Choose the desired routing option from the list and click on Change to enable it.
